Wang Yun, an employee of the drying post in Workshop 208 of Jiangsu Jiangshan Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. In her spare time, she actively participates in public welfare activities and voluntary blood donation activities. In 2016, Wang Yun joined the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank. In 2022, Wang Yun successfully matched with a female leukemia patient. In 2023, Wang Yun successfully donated 450 milliliters of hematopoietic stem cell suspension, reignited the patient's light of life, and was awarded the Jiangsu Province "Charity Medal". In 2024, Wang Yun was awarded the Jingjiang "Charity Spirit Award".

As an ordinary person with almost no sense of existence in ordinary life, I never imagined that I would have such an opportunity in my life to save the life of a leukemia patient in such a way, so that another girl could have the opportunity to keep her mother and not suffer from the despair of "having a son but not being loved".

I first participated in volunteer activities very early, and I can't remember whether it was in 2010 or 2011. That time, we served the elderly in the nursing home at Xieqiao. This nursing home has long been gone, and the elderly have also moved to a better condition in the New Port City nursing home. We clean the rooms for the elderly, trim their nails, shave, pluck their ears, cut their hair, and accompany them to chat about household chores, all of which are very trivial matters. There are many public welfare activities in the team, and if I have time, I will participate.

At that time, there were not as many people who understood us as there are now, and many people even thought that volunteers were synonymous with "two" and "fool". Because volunteers not only have no salary, but also need to contribute free of charge. They also have to pay an annual fee to buy things for elderly people who are lonely. There have been setbacks and disappointments in the middle, but I have never given up. Many people have also come and gone. When I saw the excited expression on the face of new volunteers when they first joined, I wanted to tell them that reality will never be as perfect as imagined; When I see someone leave disappointed, I want to tell them that reality is not ideal, just put in effort and persevere. In fact, every relay is a transmission of love. Personal abilities are limited, but a caring heart cannot be erased. Even if it is just a greeting, a helping gesture, a bending gesture, or a smiling face in life, they are all contributing their meager efforts to society. With more people and things done, there will be more positive energy, and this society will be more civilized and harmonious.

As a volunteer, helping others is actually a form of self-help. You can learn a lot from it, such as communicating with others, caring, empathizing, learning new skills, and elevating your thoughts. I started donating blood for free for the first time in 2006, and since 2014, I have been unable to donate blood due to mild anemia. I have donated over 3000 milliliters of blood in total. In 2016, my husband and I signed up for a volunteer activity at the Ma Zhou Home and collected blood to join the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank.

On August 11, 2022, I received a phone call from the Jingjiang Red Cross Society, informing me of the successful initial mating with a patient and inquiring about my willingness to donate. At that time, I was confused. After so many years, I almost forgot about joining the bone marrow bank, and I agreed without hesitation. Then I went to communicate with my husband, and he also agreed and supported me. We are all volunteers entering the warehouse. He envies me for being luckier than him. The next step is to notify that blood will be drawn and sent to Suzhou for high-resolution testing on the 23rd. After everything is approved, it is agreed to go to Taizhou for a physical examination on September 7th. The results were obtained on the 15th, and mild anemia was found. The donation can only be made after the body has been adjusted to meet the standards. I underwent another test in October and November, and both reached normal values. On January 13th this year, the Red Cross notified me that I was preparing to donate. On February 3rd, I officially signed the agreement to donate hematopoietic stem cells.

All donation news and reports are just praising the behavior of us donors, and colleagues and friends who see the news will also praise us. But there are still certain blind spots in cognition. In fact, donating hematopoietic stem cells is not a so-called "bone marrow suction", the process is not complicated, nor is it terrifying.

I hope one day, everyone will not admire us with confusion about donating hematopoietic stem cells, but feel that "donating hematopoietic stem cells is not as scary as I imagined, maybe I can do my best.".

So I recorded my donation process: in the first few days, it was a blood draw and mobilization mode, with mobilization agents injected once a day in the morning and afternoon. The purpose of this injection was to induce a large number of hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow into the external circulating blood, which may cause slight discomfort, but within the acceptable range, it can be ignored. Official collection, due to the inability to use the toilet during the blood collection process, dry goods are mainly needed in the morning, and no one dares to drink water or milk. Then insert needles and catheters into each arm, bleeding back into the bloodstream, similar to donating platelets. The bleeding is shaken by a centrifuge, leaving the necessary hematopoietic stem cells, and the rest is fed back into my body. The most uncomfortable thing during this period is not the injection and blood being drawn out, but lying flat unable to turn over and lift arms. Over time, both hands and feet have become numb. Midway, during visits from leaders and media interviews, my husband would feed me glucose calcium zinc oral solution every half hour to replenish the calcium lost in my body. After a long period of over 6 hours, 450 milliliters of hematopoietic stem cell suspension were finally collected. After labeling and taking a photo with me, the suspension of hematopoietic stem cells with my body temperature was immediately sent to Shanghai Ruijin Hospital for input into the patient's body.

In fact, collecting hematopoietic stem cells is as simple and safe as collecting our own blood components. Hematopoietic stem cells in the human body have strong regenerative ability, and in one to two weeks, various blood cells in the blood can return to their original levels.

There is a set of data showing that there are currently over 4 million patients waiting for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in China, with an annual increase of over 40000. However, the data from the China Bone Marrow Bank is only over 3 million, and the probability of successful matching is about one in 100000. There are also some patients who cannot achieve or refuse to donate due to various reasons after successful matching. How terrifying is this data? Who wouldn't want to struggle in the face of death? But where is the hope of rebirth? In you! In me! As long as you and I join the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank under favorable conditions, and contribute a little bit of regenerative hematopoietic stem cells after successful typing, we can save a patient and a family. What you need to overcome is the temporary discomfort in your body and the fear of getting injections for several consecutive days.

As long as everyone gives a little love, the world will become a beautiful world!
